Re: My first brew ever - a mini-BIAB All Amarillo APA

Very nice write up! Don't be in too much of a hurry to package the beer. Even though you have reached your target gravity the yeast is still working at cleaning things up. You may be on target tho having gone this long. I typically go 14 days but that us because I usually have Saturdays to myself. 1...

Re: I'm thinking of buying a...

I have one of those ss hop baskets. I liked the idea of and I got it on a presale/ trial deal. It is come shaped at the bottom and seems to trap and clog with the pellet debris. Another problem I had is that I use a 15 gal pot to do 5 gal batches and the wort level isn't high enough to reach up the ...

Re: First attemp at BIAB

Nicely done and great pics!
In the pics you seem to have your lid on during the boil. I'm not sure if that was the case but it is not recommended. DMS precursors are boiled off in the steam and will be reintroduced to your wort if the lid is on.

Re: Pressurized fermentation using a spunding valve

Very nice MS. Since moving I have gone back to my fermentation buckets until I get my dedicated brew shed built. I still ran into issues keeping pressure so I need a space and time to investigate my problems.

Re: Actual Values and BIABacus

Your dry hop addition isn't going to add any bitterness just flavoring I believe. The biabacus sees this and scales the rest to hit your 50 ibu goal.

Re: Mash temp and time of mash.

To ensure the best mash we recommend 90min mashes and stirring on occasion. The stirring helps wash the sugars from the grains.

Re: Newbie Fermentation question.

I would not try it. Lagers are more of an advanced brew and you really need to be able to control your fermentation temperatures. The yeast will probably do some kind of fermentation at 17 but it won't be very good. The yeast will be stressed and give you off flavors. What you could do is get a clea...

Nothing to be embarrassed about Pat. You are on the path of doing something special for brewing (again), and that takes time.

Re: Tinseth formula issues?

I realize there is already a ton of documentation on the inaccuracies of ibu calculations. What I found most interesting is the fact that Glenn used whole hops in his testing and believes that once the hops were covered in the sugars in the wort that hop oil extraction dropped and that pellets are p...

Tinseth formula issues?

I recently listened to most of an experimental homebrewing podcast. The topic was expected ibu's vs measured. I have not listened to the lead up cast but the experiment was to provide listeners with an APA, IPA and IIPA recipe. Listeners brewed these and submitted them for testing. Across the board ...

Re: East Fremantle Brew Day - Sun 19th

I was curious about the long boil time as well. It is my thinking that Belgians use sugar to pump up the gravity and to help ensure a drier finished product.

Re: East Fremantle Brew Day - Sun 19th

I just brewed something along the lines of this.https://brewedbyus.com/recipes
I didn't make a biabacus because I didn't know how to handle the sugars going into the fermenter. I also used goldings only. I brewed a Belgian blonde before hand and racked the golden on top of the yeast cake.
